From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

At first, my neighbor Deacon frustrated me.

Sure, he was great-looking and friendly.

But our walls were thin, and on occasion, he’d bring women to his place and keep me awake while he “entertained” them.

As a single mother to an infant, I didn’t appreciate it.

So, finally it was my turn.

When my daughter wouldn’t stop wailing one night, Mr. Manwhore came knocking on my door.

Miraculously, at the sound of his voice, Sunny stopped crying. And when he held her…she eventually fell asleep in his arms.

Deacon was rough on the exterior, but apparently on the inside? Mr. Single-and-Ready-to-Mingle was a baby whisperer.

After that night, we became friends.

He’d go for coffee runs. Come over to chat. Normal friend stuff.

But over time, our conversations ran deeper. We got closer.

Until one night we crossed the line.

Our friendship turned into a complicated mess.

I’d gone and fallen for a guy who’d sworn off commitment and kids.

I knew Deacon was starting to care for me too, even though Sunny and I didn’t fit into any plan he’d ever imagined for himself.

He was wrong for me—so wrong that I’d dubbed him the “anti-boyfriend.”

Then why did I wish more than anything that I could be the one woman to change him?

THE ELITE SEVEN

7 AUTHORS.

7 STORIES.

7 DEADLY SINS.

Since 1942, The Elite Seven Society have created and guided influential leaders, molding the country into something better. This society was birthed by Malcom Benedict, II who wanted more for Americans. More wealth. More influence. More power. Some leaders have the skills, but not the influence, and that simply wasn’t fair according to Mr. Benedict. He invested his own money and time to construct a society that bred the best of the best, year after year.

But to be the best, you must be ruthless.

Good leaders make sacrifices. Sometimes the sacrifices are hard, but the rewards are plentiful. Mr. Benedict made sure to indulge these leaders with their utmost desires. A devout Catholic himself, he designed a society that rewarded his leaders with the sins that were frowned upon. If they were giving up love and happiness and joy for the betterment of the country, they deserved something in its stead.

Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust.

Choosing leaders for this society means that it takes intense focus. Only seven are to be selected, and the investments and time are showered upon the new seven chosen every four years. The predecessors of each group of seven choose people who fit the sin that will mold them into who they are needed to be in the future—what America needs them to be. This is after a detailed study of many potential candidates. The university’s acting dean behaves as a liaison for the society bringing the college applicants to the predecessors so that the selection may begin. The society members who are going out will bring forth a candidate that the society votes on and approves.

After they are chosen, the initiates are given a token and an invitation to initiation. The initiation will be a test to their character and ability to do what’s right for the betterment of the society. Once the initiates pass their test, they are discreetly branded with the mark of the society, and are groomed through challenges during the course of their elite education to breed them into the influential people they were meant to be.

Once in The Elite Seven, there is no getting out. The money and power are their reward. Should they choose to stray or break the rules, the society strips them of everything. Anything they once had will be removed. Opportunities will never arise. They will no longer have the support of the society. To this day, there have been no known occurrences of anyone from the society having to be banished. This elite group of people are what every young man and woman aspire to be a part of. While the group is a secret society, they are whispered about amongst the privileged folks in the country. Anyone who is anyone knows of the group and secretly hopes it’s their son or daughter who are selected, for good fortune is showered on the family for decades to come.

Mi primera reseña en el blog | My first review on the blog

GODS & MONSTERS
SAFFRON A. KENT
Blur:
He was an artist. She was his muse.
To everyone in town, Abel Adams was the devil's spawn, a boy who never should have been born. A monster.
To twelve year-old Evie Hart, he was just a boy with golden hair, soft t-shirts and a camera. A boy who loved taking her picture and sneaking her chocolates before dinner. A boy who made her feel special.
Despite her family's warnings, she loved him in secret for six years. They met in empty classrooms and kissed in darkened church closets. Until they
Until the time came to choose between love and family, and Evie chose Abel.
Because their love was worth the risk. Their love was the stuff of legend.
But the thing about legends is that they are cautionary tales. They are made of choices and mistakes. And for Abel and Evie, the artist and the muse, those mistakes come in the form of lights, camera, sex.

Sinopsis:

Young God by Halsey & Flowers by Bastille (ft. James Arthur & Rationale).

~ENGLISH REVIEW~
"They don’t understand that when a boy with enough heat to burn the sun falls in love with a girl, he torches the whole world".

Well, it took me a while to think about what to write to express what I felt when reading this book. So I'll just say that I ended up in a love-hate relationship.

Abel is a boy who has endured his fair share of abuse, murderous looks and contempt of an entire town for the simple fact of not coming from the right family.

Evie is the princess of the town, perfect notes, perfect family in the eyes of others and obedient.

Obviously, she was forbidden to make any kind of contact with Abel and obviously she did not listen.

“What if I told you that I bite?”
“What?” I laugh.
“Yeah. They call me a monster, right? What if I told you I’m exactly what they call me and on top of that, I’ve got sharp teeth. What then? Are you gonna have nightmares tonight?”
“Then, I’d tell you that you’re not gonna gonna bite me.”
“How’d you figure that?”
“Because I’m not food. And if you really wanted to bite something, I’d give you this. My chocolate.”

Their love started when they were just children, and the truth is that at the beginning they were so cute that I just kept reading, until I didn't want to.

As they grew, EVERYTHING became much more intense, less innocent and cute. They could no longer see each other secretly, or at least not as often. I know that a person can take so much, I understand that, but what I can not understand (in certain occasions) was Abel's and Evie willing to take everything that came (good or bad) from him. And I totally respect her because of that kind of strenght. You go girl, but you have to stop when things get too toxic (I did it and paused for two days from the book). Eventually they worked on everything, they said what they had to say and they were taking baby steps.

In short, this is the first book that I read from the author and I must say that I liked it a lot, I related to it in some aspects, but it did not leave me that satisfied. Too much toxicity for me.

The phrase that I will remember because it is very real to what my mom is to me:

But I guess, a mother is capable of anything. A mother is a goddess who can do anything to protect her child, including hurting herself.

As I was reading the book, two songs came to mind that perfectly describe Abel and Evie:

Young God by Halsey & Flowers by Bastille (ft. James Arthur & Rational). If you read the book make sure you listen to these songs so you can see what I mean.

And without more to say I give this book a solid 3.7 out of 5
